Fasting

The thought of days without food seemed like torture, but now soon breaking our 2 and a half day water-only fast, I must say it was a piece of cake. And not only that, but I think it is a must-do, especially if you’re ever feeling scattered, irritable, or just plain grumpy.

Rudi and I have been on each other’s nerves for the last week, so Rudi suggestedwe not eat until we’re nice to each other again. Of course, the thought of that seemed absurd. How can this guy suggest we not eat in order to solve our problems? If anything, I thought it would put me in an even more worse mood because how dare he impose this eating restriction on me, have this done to my body. And ultimately, I thought fasting would obviously make us more cranky. But I agreed anyway, cuz I wanted to prove him wrong. That it wouldn’t be the magical antidote to our already testy demeanors.

I would have to admit, the first 24 hours were a bit hard. Discomfort and a bit of nausea had me wondering how long we could keep this up. But low and behold, that went away soon enough, and I felt more focused, energized, aware, and content. I even felt that I could easily keep this up for a week or longer. In fact, when I woke up this morning, nearly 48 hours since I last ate solid food, I felt full. It was very strange and awesome at the same time. And as for the dynamic between me and Rudi, just great. We chatted until 4am, woke up at 8:30am, and talked until noon all with good feelings and no bitterness in our hearts.

But we’ll be breaking our fast this evening… personally, I’d like to continue but I think Rudi is starting to wear down. LOL. Also, while I do feel energized, I don’t have a lot of stamina, as my body is in energy-conservation mode. And with the projects I have ahead of me, now is not a great time to fast, but perhaps after the holidays, I’ll do it again.

Here’s a very good article about fasting, explaining the benefits and contains guidelines on how to do it safely. If you’re looking for a challenge with excellent payoffs, do consider it and give it a try. If anything, it’ll reduce your grocery bill. LOL

Helen Keller

I was thinking about Helen Keller today, and trying to remember a quote which I had read long ago when I was obsessed about The Miracle Worker and going through a funky Patty Duke phase. Anyway, I found the quote today, and now I remembered why I loved it so much. Here it is, in the words of Annie Sullivan, her teacher.

“At another time she asked, ‘What is a soul?’ ‘No one knows what the soul

is like,’ I replied; ‘but we know that it is not the body, and it is that part of us which thinks and loves and hopes, and which Christian people believe will live on after the body is dead.’ . . . I explained to her that the soul, too, is invisible, or in other words, that it is without apparent form. ‘But if I write what my soul thinks,’ she said, ‘then it will be visible, and the words will be its body.’”

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend they say. In light of this article which showed up in Yahoo! today, Dust to dust to… diamonds? US firm turns cremated remains into precious gems, that saying could be more meaningful than one would think. Have a read about these “family jewels”....
